CELEBRATING 45 YEARS OF BARBADOS’ INDEPENDENCE
Industry: Destinations

British Holidaymakers Join World In Congratulating Barbados

(TRAVPR.COM) UNITED KINGDOM - November 10th, 2011 - On November 30th, Barbadians will be celebrating a milestone 45 years of independence and preparations for the celebrations have already begun in and around Bridgetown. On November 1st, cricketing legend and politician Reverend Dr Wes Hall illuminated Broad Street and Swan Street, main thoroughfares in the capital. The illumination of Parliament, Independence Arch and Independence Square with bulbs in the national colours of blue and gold is a highlight of the season; other events include an elaborate parade, fairs, sports competitions and the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA).

All year round, Barbados is proving itself a fantastic destination for families, couples and sun-loving singles. One of the most popular of the Caribbean’s 7,000 islands, Barbados offers a versatile experience: it has some of the Caribbean’s best hotels, resorts, shopping and nightlife. The mountainous interior offers spectacular views of the choppy Atlantic meeting the calm Caribbean and the seas offer up a fine mix of pristine beaches and conditions suitable for any water-sport that takes your fancy.

“We’re honoured to be sending British tourists to Barbados at a time of such intense national pride” said a representative for tour operator Kenwood Travel. “We get so much positive feedback from customers about trips to the island, and it’s the warmness of the Barbadian people that underpins it all”. Barbados is a major destination for the business and currently, Barbados Holidays from Kenwood Travel offer up to 50% off on top name resorts like Almond, Coconut Court, Settlers’ Beach and the Elegant Hotels chain.

Barbados was a British colony from its foundation in 1627 up until independence in 1966: its uninterrupted rule is actually unique among the Caribbean islands, which typically changed hands between the warring colonial powers multiple times. Control of the island was wrested from British rule by Sir Grantley Adams and his Barbados Labour Party after World War II. Sir Adams was the first premier of Barbados in a time when it was a self-governing Colony, and moved the island nation towards full independence during his premiership. Rival and successor Errol Walton Barrow eventually negotiated independence with Britain in June 1966.
