WHO’S GOING WHERE IN SPAIN THIS SUMMER?
Industry: Destinations

Spain-holiday.com delves into rental enquiries for the first half of the year. Tracking the most popular and emerging destinations for Summer 2014.

(TRAVPR.COM) SPAIN - June 10th, 2014 -

Barcelona takes top spot

Barcelona has knocked Nerja off the top spot, receiving nearly 13,000 enquiries from January through to May this year, with Nerja stepping down into second place. Marbella was the third most requested destination, receiving nearly 6,000 guest enquiries.

Catalonia and Andalusia, regional champions

The two regions wiped the board in terms of enquiries, with eight out of the top 10 destinations, being located in one of the regions.

Who’s booking?

The Brits are still registering more enquiries than any other nationality, with Marbella their destination of choice. The French market delivered the second most enquiries, with Spanish domestic travellers in third place.

What’s new?

Each season we take a look at some of the emerging resorts for Summer 2014. Destinations that have received the highest enquiry increase year on year.

Up-and-coming stars for this year include:

El Garraf: Sitges is to date, the most popular destination in the El Garraf region of the Costa Brava and is constantly within the Top 10 most requested destinations on Spain-holiday.com. This year it seems holidaymakers are broadening their horizons and seeking alternative resorts in the area; with Olivella and Cubellas seeing some of the biggest yr-on-yr enquiry increases. The region is renowned for its diversity of landscape, excellent beaches and easy travelling distance to Barcelona.

Tarragona province: The Costa Dorada and province of Tarragona are too often overlooked by holidaymakers visiting Catalona; with the Costa Brava and Barcelona regularly  featuring in the top destinations table. The first half of this year sees the beautiful area of the Ebro Delta and the coastal villages of  Riumar, La Pineda and Cunit receiving a substantial year-on-year increase.

San Sebastian: The playful city of San Sebastian nearly doubled its enquiries from the same period of 2013. The principal city of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country is a popular year-round destination, renowned for its excellence in gastronomy and surfing. It also hosts the esteemed San Sebastian Film Festival.

Rural Andalusia: The region of Andalusia is the most popular tourist destination in Spain. The coastal areas of the Costa del Sol, Costa de la Luz and Costa Tropical attract millions of visitors every year. This year, however, we are seeing a sharp rise in the number of enquiries for rural Andalusia. The whitewashed village of El Pinar in the Lecrin Valley, Granada. Canillas de Albaida in the Axarquia, Malaga and Ardales, with its backdrop of the Ronda Mountains, are all emerging destinations for 2014.
