Winter is just around the corner in the Scottish Highlands.

(TRAVPR.COM) SCOTLAND - December 28th, 2015 -  People around the country are getting ready to walk in the hills. However, is everyone ready for Winter.  It is very important to know what to do when winter mountaineering and where to go.

Unexplored Scotland has for the winter 2016 season a great programme of 2 day winter skills courses and 5 day winter mountaineering courses. On these courses every participant learns how to walk in the mountains at winter conditions, learn how to use ice axes, crampons and how to kick steps. A great emphasis is on ice axe arresting. This is a way to stop yourself from sliding down a snow slope.

Furthermore it is even more important to avoid any problems you may occur in the winter mountains.  On the courses with Unexplored Scotland you will also learn on how to plan a day out in the mountains with avoiding avalanche hazards and beat approach to the summit. Avalanche awareness is a big part of the courses. Avalanches is something that can be out of control of the winter walkers but an awareness where it may happen and how to avoid getting caught in an avalanche is very useful.

Another part is on how to navigate in the winter and how to pace steps and use map and compass. On the 5 day courses you will also spend 2 days on a expedition with staying in a snow hole. This is hard work and is certainly not for the faint hearted.
