LondonTown.com looks at the best events in London this weekend

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - August 1st, 2014 - Gilbert & George: Scapegoating Pictures for London is now open at the White Cube Bermondsey. The free exhibition sees the iconic art duo explore the themes of paranoia, fundamentalism, surveillance and religion that run throughout the modern world. Through a series of contemporary collaged prints - all of which feature the artists themselves at the centre, their signature over the past 50 years - they depict the landscape of contemporary London and "mirror the tensions and contradictions of Britain in the era of Ukip" (The Guardian). For further details visit LondonTown.com, where a number of London hotels can also be booked.

More art can be found at Hackney WickED, showcasing the thriving East End art scene with work by both local and international artists. The three-day festival takes place across a number of galleries, open studios and pop up spaces in Hackney Wick. In central London meanwhile, the Photographers' Gallery presents Primrose: Russian Colour Photography. Another free exhibition, it displays over 140 works from the 20th century, many never seen before in the UK, to give a retrospective of colour experiments and developments in Russian photography over the course of a century.

Backed by film director and local resident Danny Boyle, Shuffle Festival is back for its second year in 2014. Taking place in and around Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, it not only boasts a great programme of films but also includes street food, a science fete, comedy, music and performance art. Films of yesteryear can be enjoyed at the Found Footage Festival, returning to London for its tenth anniversary this weekend. Celebrating the humble VHS, the festival screens weird and wonderful videos found at charity shops, garage sales and everywhere in between with humorous supporting commentary.

Part of the National Maritime Museum's World War One commemorations, Forgotten Fighters: the First World War at Sea opens this Saturday. Through a wide range of objects including weaponry, photographs and medals, the new gallery explores the naval and maritime dimensions of the conflict.

Further London events happening this weekend include Kids Week, inviting children to enjoy theatreland for free; London Beach Rugby, with over 30 teams competing for charity; and Eid Festival, celebrating the end of Ramadan with a day of live music, food, exhibitions and displays about Islam.
