Winter adventures in the Highlands of Scotland
(TRAVPR.COM) UNITED KINGDOM - October 27th, 2017 - Unexplored Scotland has announced a string of Winter skills and Winter mountaineering courses for early 2018. There will be 2 different courses. A two-day course, which will take participants to the Cairngorm Mountains will include ice axe arrest, how to walk on steep ground, use of ice axe, walking with crampons and last not least avalanche awareness. This course is designed for people who have good summer mountain experience and want to venture more into the winter to gain confidence and the right skills. After completion participants should be effective group members when walking in the Scottish winter mountains.
Another course offered is the Winter mountaineering course. The first to days are designed to be the same as the 2-day winter skills. However, on the 3rd day it will become more technical and there might be some easy rope work or some poor visibility navigation in winter. The last 2 days is going to be an expedition in the Cairngorm hills. Fist the group will walk up to the mountains for a good place to snowhole. Very often some good navigation is required. Then the participants will dig a snowhole for staying overnight. “It’s always exciting to build your own home for a night” comments Andreas the senior instructor of Unexplored Scotland. After a night in the snowhole and another day in the hills the course will be concluded.
A very exciting and new trip is a night camping on Scotland’s highest peak, Ben Nevis. Introduced last Winter the company is planning to run 4 trips to the summit of Ben Nevis. Unexplored Scotland is the only company offering this service and is unique and a real adventure.
