POLENG’ BEYOND BLACK AND WHITE: PASSIONATE ARTIST PRESENTS BRILLIANT ARTWORKS AT ALILA VILLAS SOORI 1-14 FEBRUARY 2014
Industry: Accommodation

Alila Villas Soori will once again present an exhibition of local arts in February, showcasing the latest works of the talented East Java-born artist, Ponco Setyohadi.

(TRAVPR.COM) INDONESIA - January 29th, 2014 - Ponco Setyohadi discovered his artistic passion at an early age, growing up in his hometown in Malang. He experimented with drawing, sketching and painting using various mediums and anything that he could lay his hands on. Growing into his teens, he nurtured his talent by pursuing a formal education in the arts at the IKIP Malang University.

After moving to Bali, he stayed for the next two decades, working at his art and also did a stint as a textile and jewellery designer at the renowned Bali-based jewellery company, John Hardy. He was much taken with the colourful culture and customs of this beautiful island which inspired much of his works.

His collections feature an eclectic range of styles, from expressionism and realism, to romantics and naturalism. Along the way, he had the opportunity to discover the world by travelling to Europe, learning the evolution of art in Rome, the Vatican, Prague, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Vienna. Journeys to Southeast Asia and China further enriched and inspired his work on many levels.

His forthcoming solo exhibition at Alila Villas Soori is an interesting project as it opens a window to Ponco’s world of integrative art. Themed “Poleng”, a Balinese aspect of balance and harmony, chiefly depicted through the checkered fabric of black and white, it showcases Ponco’s collection of paintings that hold sway from the deep philosophical and religious interpretations of Balinese culture, presenting artworks within the Poleng concept, while playing with colour compositions, space and lines on the canvas using the traditional fabric mixed with acrylic and soft pastels.

The Poleng fabric is omnipresent in Balinese lifestyles, not only for religious observance, but also in things profane or secular, such as umbrellas, banners, ornaments for monuments or statues, and even table cloths or interior décor. The philosophical meaning of the motif’s black-and-white is Rwabhineda – a Balinese Hindu concept of equally opposing sides, as in Yin and Yang, good and evil, north and west, long and short, hence Ponco’s interplay on the medium, beyond mere black and white, will be an inspiring showcase.

His solo exhibition will be held 1-14 February 2014 at The Courtyard.
