Beer Price Comparison in top European Destinations

(TRAVPR.COM) GERMANY - November 8th, 2013 -

Beer necessities

For many travellers city trips and drinking beer go hand in hand. However, drinking habits, preferences and the prices of beer within Europe vary. Popular flight price comparison website, flights.idealo.co.uk, has investigated Europe's beer drinking customs and compared local prices to bring you a beer guide to 8 European cities. Two separate beer prices were researched per city, prices of beer in low-priced local bars and tourist prices paid in top tourist locations.

A comparison of beer consumption in the 8 countries shows Germany as the champion drinking nation. Poland is runner up, while the United Kingdom shares third price with The Netherlands. France and Italy, more famous for their excellent choice of wines, come last.

Berlin

Beer is a staple in Germany and Berlin is the country's favourite drinking destination. For the highest concentration of bars head to the Kreuzberg and Neukölln districts, where trendy bars have all but replaced the more traditional pub or “Eckkneipe”. The most popular beers in Berlin are Berliner, Wernesgrüner and Becks, which cost anything between 2€ and 5€ for a half litre glass. Ask for “ein großes Bier”.

Flights from London to Berlin cost £29

Warsaw

Warsaw's historic city centre and the district called Powiśle, in particular the street “Nowy Świat" are full of welcoming bars and breweries. Drinking in public is forbidden in Warsaw, but is especially popular on the right bank of the Wisla, where it is “tolerated”. Poland's favourite brands are Tyskie, Żywiec and Lech, which are drunk from 0.5 litre glasses and cost between 1.20€ and 3.60€.

Fly from London to Warsaw for £38.

Amsterdam

The most famous Dutch beer brand, Heineken, hails from Amsterdam. The "Heineken Experience" in the former brewery in the city centre is very popular with tourists. Brouwerij 't IJ, located next to a windmill, has a good selection of organic beers and is less touristy. In October, head for the beer-tasting festival at the Beurs van Berlage. Riding around on a beerbike (multi-person bike) whilst drinking beer is typical for Amsterdam. Heineken, Amstel and Grolsch are the most popular beers in Holland. Prices range from 2€ to 6€ for 0.33 litres.

Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the most frequently visited cities in Spain and Europe. Tourists flock to Barcelona not only to enjoy the great architecture, but to drink in the many bars and cafes. The best known districts for drinking are the Barrio Gotico, the Ramblas and the Barrio de Gracia. The Spanish tend to go out late and move from bar to bar enjoying their drinks with tapas - a small snack. San Miguel, Estrella and Cruzcampo are the favourite Spanish beer brands. A beer costs from 1.50€ to 4€ for 0.33 litres.

Flights from London to Barcelona cost £33

Lisbon

Lisbon's nightlife revolves around the Bairro Alto, famous for its Fado Clubs, discos and bars. This area is teeming with locals as well as visitors enjoying their imperial (small beer) or caneca (large beer). Top tips for tourists include the Museu de Cerveja, the Servejeria and the beautiful Cervejeria Trinidade. Lisbon's newest nightlife development is the Docas, next to the Ponte 25 Abril. These old, once derelict docks have recently been modernised and now house numerous bars, for instance the Doca de Santo Amaro and Doca de Alcantara. Popular beer brands in Portugal are Super Bock, Sagres and Imperial, with 0.25 litres costing 1€ to 3€.

Flights from London to Lisbon are available for £55

Bolzano

Bolzano, capital of the province South Tyrol in northern Italy, is the gate to the Dolomites. With its many concerts, festivals, art exhibitions and trade fairs, this cultural city has a lot to offer tourists. The nightlife in Bolzano is very lively and takes place around the city centre on the Piazza delle Erbe and nearby streets. This area is famous for its traditional bars, serving locally brewed beer to the accompaniment of live music. Popular beer brands in Bolzano are Forst, Hopfen & Co or Paulaner. Expect to pay 2.50 € to 4 € for a 0.2 litre glass.

Flights from London to Verona cost £38

Lille

Lille is only an hour from Paris by train and is France's top beer destination, not just because many bars in Lille have their own brewery. Due to Lille's vicinity to Belgium, bars also serve a wide choice of excellent Belgian beers such as Leffe, Hoegaarden, Grimbergen. Popular bars are located around the historical 'Grand Place' and 'Vieux Lille', where the estaminet (beer bars) are to be found. Every year in September the Grande Braderie takes place in Lille – a flea market with live music where visitors consume large quantities of mussels and drink gallons of beer. The most popular beers here are Heineken, Kronenbourg and 1664, which are drunk in 0.25 litre glasses and cost between 2.80 € and 5 €.

The price of a flight from London to Paris is £43

From London, the cheapest beer drinking destination is Berlin, with a flight from London to Berlin plus 2 litres of excellent beer costing only £35.80. Two further reasons to book a city trip to Berlin: the city's reputation as an affordable destination with unconventional style and the Germans' title as best beer drinking nation.
