A study by apartment rentals specialist Only-apartments.com has revealed that Portugal, Athens and some – but not all – Eastern European capitals represent the most economical options for a city break.

(TRAVPR.COM) SPAIN - September 12th, 2013 - A study by apartment rentals specialist Only-apartments.com has revealed that Portugal, Athens and some – but not all – Eastern European capitals represent the most economical options for a city break.

The study compared the average prices of 16 typical items bought during a city break in 21 European cities (for example, a 48-hour travel card)  the average nightly rate charged by 9,305 self-catering apartments, and the average price charged by each city’s 3 and 4 star hotels.

It found that:

·         The lowest-cost destination overall is Budapest, where you can sleep, travel around and eat for two days for just £118/$187, followed by Oporto (£132/$209), Athens (£142/$225) Lisbon (£147/$233), Berlin y Krakow (both £157/$248), while the most expensive were Amsterdam (from £318/$503), London (£314/$497) and Venice (£292/$462)

·         The study confirmed that leaving the Eurozone for does not always mean a saving – based on the current exchange rate, it’s possible to have a cheaper weekend in Oporto, Lisbon or Berlin than in Dubrovnik or Istanbul (both £192/$304)

·         When travelling in a couple, the ability to eat some meals at home almost always allowed for a cheaper trip. What’s more, the price of self-catering accommodation was usually lower than than of a 3 or 4 star hotel – this was the case in 16 of the 21 cities included in the study

·         There was not always a relationship between the cost of accommodation in a city and the cost of living. Vienna, for example, was surprisingly among the cheapest cities for both types of accommodation, while its cost of living was around average. On the other hand, it’s cheaper to eat, drink and get around Barcelona than the price of accommodation – above average for the sample – would lead us to imagine

Only-apartments carried out this study for various reasons.

Firstly, the company wanted to put the key advantage that apartments offer – namely, the opportunity to use a kitchen – to the test, and find out what level of saving this offered to travellers around the continent.

The research showed that the potential saving of using apartment is considerable in each destination, even without travellers eating most of their meals at home. For example, if a couple has breakfast, lunch and dinner at home one day, and the next eats out at lunch and dinner, they would save up to £79/$125 in just two days.

Secondly, the company wanted to be able to provide up-to-date content about saving money, which is relevant to different types of client. Only-apartment.com’s reservation data shows that European travellers are taking short, frequent trips to cities that are served by the low-cost airline networks, therefore money is a key enabling factor.

“We don’t imagine that this information will change any travelers’ minds about where to go next, but we do think that for consumers, it’s interesting to know which cities are especially easy on the wallet so that we can add them to our future plans” commented Ramon Glieneke, Marketing & Commercial Director at Only-apartments.

Methodology

·         The study was carried out during August 2013, with all prices and exchange rates valid on 30.08.13

·         Information about transport costs was sourced from municipal public transport authorities. In cities that did not have a 24 or 48 hour travelcard, the cost of 10 single tickets was included.

·         Food and drink costs were researched via online supermarket in each country, plus price comparison websites, and media reports from the respective destinations

·         The average price of an apartment was researched from a total of 9,305 apartamentos (average 443 apartments per city), comparing the average price based on two sharing. Hotel information was researched from Numbeo.
