TWO NEW MUSEUMS ABOUT THE MAYA NOW OPEN IN YUCATAN, MEXICO.
Industry: Exhibitions

Travelers interested in the Mayan Culture now have 2 new museums to visit in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.

(TRAVPR.COM) UNITED STATES - March 7th, 2013 - The first new major museum to open is Gran Museo Del Mundo Maya, located in Merida, originally opened in September 2012, was closed for a while and is now open again. The expansive museum has a collection of more than 500 pieces, including textiles, religious objects, and items reflecting the current lives of the Mayas. They have engravings, books, and historical documents, artistic and religious works from the colonial historic era in addition to artifacts from the pre-Hispanic era including stelas, stone sculptures, ceramics and offerings. The exhibit rooms move from the present into the past through four distinct sections: The Mayab, Nature and Culture; Mayas of Today; Mayas of Yesterday; and Ancestral Mayas. The unique museum has many interactive exhibits and even has a laser light and sound show in the evenings.

Cancun’s recently opened (November 2012) Museo Maya de Cancun includes 350 archeological artifacts including some that have never been displayed and some discovered in recent excavations. Some artifacts were previously exhibited at the Museo Regional de Yucatan or “Canton Palace” in Merida and the former Archeological Museum in Cancun. The massive 55,000 square feet structure contains three 4,400-square-foot exhibition halls, two for permanent exhibits and one temporary exhibitions. A visit to the museum also includes access to the archaeological site of San Miguelito.

The educational travel company, Explorations Inc., is offering an scholar-escorted, 14 day cultural tour in Yucatan that allows an opportunity to visit both these major new museums. Their MUNDO MAYA YUCATAN EXPLORATION is scheduled for November 5 - 18, 2013, and can be found online at AdventuresOfDiscovery.com.

Explorations' holistic itinerary into the northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula highlights the past and living history of the Maya with visits to Mérida, Valladolid, Campeche, Izamal, Ek Balam, Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Sayil, Akumal, Mayan villages, markets, colonial haciendas, cenotes, three coasts and more. Both the cultural and natural history are explored along with regional cuisines of Yucatan.

The small group tour was designed and is escorted by anthropologist Charlie Strader, President of Explorations. Having traveled throughout Yucatan and Mexico many times, he wanted to offer a unique tour that takes time to enjoy and absorb the area visited and not rush travelers around to just a few highlights.

In addition to seeing the wonderful highlights in Northern Yucatan, travelers will also get to experience many of the small wonders to be found there - at small archaeology sites, traditional Mayan towns and villages, beautiful nature areas, local restaurants and markets, and with interactions with local residents. More information about the tour can be found online at AdventuresOfDiscovery.com.

Founded in 1992, Explorations Inc., offers educational adventures of discovery in Central and South America, introducing discerning travelers to indigenous cultures and the natural world. Explorations’ staff are knowledgeable, sincere, and reliable.
