LAKES REGION TOURISM ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP NEWS
Industry: Associations

Annual hospitality award given; new memorial scholarship in the works

(TRAVPR.COM) USA - October 13th, 2011 - Lakes Region, NH – At its annual meeting this month, the Lakes Region Tourism Association announced the winner of one scholarship, as well as the creation of a new scholarship.

Kayla Harper, of Meredith, was awarded the Mildred A. Beach Hospitality Scholarship. The award has been given annually since 2001 to a student majoring in the hospitality field. Harper is a student at Lakes Region Community College, where she is president of the hospitality club. She has worked in a variety of culinary jobs since she was 14, and after she graduates in May, she hopes to continue her education at Johnson & Wales University. Harper was nominated by Chef William Walsh and Chef Patrick Hall of the college’s Culinary Arts & Restaurant Management Program.

The LRTA also announced that it would create a scholarship in memory of Melvin “Mel” Borrin, a past president, board of director and most recently treasurer of the association. Borrin, who passed away in September, spent many hours volunteering in the tourism industry and area chambers of commerce. The LRTA, along with Borrin’s family, are developing the criteria for the scholarship, and the first award is expected to be given at the 2012 annual meeting.

The Lakes Region Tourism Association is the official tourism board of the region, representing close to 100 communities, 273 lakes and ponds, and more than 380 businesses in central New Hampshire, including area attractions, restaurants, retail establishments and accommodations.
