Recently NAT embarked on a historic maiden flight to Likoma Island with a large group of tourists travelling to Nkwichi Lodge in Mozambique. This historic flight to Likoma was only possible because of recent changes to the runway. In 2009 the Malawi Government upgraded the airport with a tarred runway, making it possible for the Air Malawi’s ATR-42 to land. NAT hopes other airports like Monkey Bay, Chinteche and Chelinda can also be rehabilitated in the future to stimulate both business and tourism in Malawi.
