How to Sell Travel to Women: Telephone Tips and More

From, Phyllis Stoller, The Women’s Travel Group

Few female prospects who call your agency,  will say I have no friends or I am ‘alone’ traveling. Some might begin by sharing private information about a new status- divorce, widowhood etc.  Do not let this conversation be a pity party; this is a time to help your client evolve and begin again. She called you to assist in that endeavor.

The prospect might ask about a single supplement cost and the age of the group  (age correlates to solo status- age tells her if she is the only solo).

Many prospects will finish the call with: ‘Let me see if I can find a friend to go along’. Warning: 99% of the time you will not hear from them agai.  It is hard to find individuals with the same budget, time frame, destination, energy. A lack of follow up is your opportunity to sell an all woman tour. An all woman tour is afterall a way to make new travel friends.

The concerns women express can seem irrelevant to the trip. Anticipate  insecurities  about clothing, tipping, transfers, meal arrangements.  Be prepared to answer unasked questions.  Offer to walk through the trip and see where the ‘free time’ might be. A good all women’s trip will have minimal free time, and none at the beginning when the group is composed of strangers.

Direct clients to photos of all women in women’s groups, either on Facebook or on the site of the company.  (On our site, we only use real travelers, no models or employees unless the employee worked on a trip).

Give them general background of women travelers you have helped; ask us for some general bio’s and anecdotes of real people. Women will hesitate to book if they worry about age, weight, economic status, shopping budget, wine, gluten and being newly solo.

Send your client a List of ‘Tips to Travel Solo’. Customize it and tell them you send it to all solo travelers automatically.  Make sure your client knows she is part of a growing group, not a sad sack loner.

Define an all women trip as ‘a different kind of travel’, a reminder of when we had time to be with friends in college or in the playground.  Traveling solo is a new adventure, but one that can be not so adventurous but carefully organized, with no surprises, and hopefully new friendships and memories.

Final note: Have the time to talk in depth; a rush on the phone during a busy day means you lost a good client forever. The Women's Travel Group is happy to train you to sell to women. Upcoming trips for women from www.thewomenstravelgroup.com are India and Pushkar Camel Market, Paris, Morocco and Turkey.
