Gatlinburg, Tenn. – May 28, 2015 – The very first Gatlinburg fall colors forecast of 2015 has been released early this year, as Gatlinburg TN Guide, a website dedicated to providing the best tips, info, news, and coupons for Gatlinburg, TN, announced its fall foliage predictions in early May.

Using information from previous years’ color change behavior in conjunction with corresponding weather data, the website predicts foliage in the Smokies to follow the color change schedule below:

  • Tennessee/North Carolina State Line Overlook – The colors are expected peak on top of the mountain from October 7-14. Yellows and reds first, and the rest of the colors to follow after that.
  • Downtown Gatlinburg – Colors expected to peak October 19-25
  • Pigeon Forge – Colors expected to peak October 25-31

The site also mentions possible adjustments to the prediction, such as delaying it a week in the event of heavy rain or moving color change dates forward if below-average temperatures occur.

“We have the first fall color forecast before anyone else each year,” said a spokesperson for Gatlinburg TN Guide. “Our fall foliage forecasts have historically been extremely accurate as we utilize numerous weather indicators, historical foliage data, atmospheric changes and other resources that provide us with highly accurate fall color predictions.”

In previous years, Gatlinburg TN Guide has revealed the Gatlinburg fall colors forecast in August, but they decided to release their predictions early this year due to a growing El Nino pattern and various historical data that is consistent with the weather patterns East Tennessee in experiencing this year. The website has not released an incorrect color forecast since the first predictions made years ago.

About Fall Leaf Color-Change
As the days become shorter and nights become longer, leaves change in color as trees slowly ends photosynthesis, the process that makes them green. Once photosynthesis stops completely, leaves change from deep green to shades of yellow, orange and red.

Temperature and weather also contribute to the fall color-change. Several warm, sunny days with cool nights above freezing temperatures produce the most vibrant fall colors, while freezing temperatures cause leaves to brown and fall away.
