Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, will be held on February 17,

(TRAVPR.COM) UNITED KINGDOM - February 13th, 2015 - Pancake Day in London is the perfect time for tourists to sample some delicious sweet or savoury treats, as well as have a flipping good time at one of the many popular events. Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, will be held on February 17, and marks the last day before the period of Lent considered by Christians as a time of abstinence. It is traditional to eat pancakes or crepes on the celebration day of Shrove Tuesday, which is observed in many countries across the world.

A popular event guaranteed to attract huge crowds is The Great Spitalfields Pancake Race at the historic Old Truman Brewery, in east London. Competitors need to be in fancy dress with three willing teammates to take part in the race at the Brick Lane venue, which will feature prizes and free pancakes from the nearby Hungarian Creperie. There will be music from the Lost Marbles String Band with money raised donated to London’s Air Ambulance.

A contest ideal for spectators is the annual Parliamentary Pancake Race held at Millbank where teams of MPs, Lords and political correspondents will be racing around Victoria Tower Gardens. They will compete for the event’s top prize, the Race Magnificent Tin Cup, while raising money for disability charity Rehab. There are many wonderful creperies and pancake houses in the city with savoury, sweet and even gluten-free options available. A superb place to head to is the Pancake Day Pop-Up restaurant in department store, John Lewis, where eager eaters can watch the gourmet pancakes being cooked.
