CARROM TOURNAMENT AT THE HOLIDAY INN DUBAI – AL BARSHA
Industry: Events

Carrom Tournament at the Holiday Inn Dubai – Al Barsha

(TRAVPR.COM) UAE - September 8th, 2010 - Between 8pm and 9h30pm on Tuesday the 7th of September, the Holiday Inn Dubai – Al Barsha will host a Carrom Tournament in their Al Sarab restaurant where three teams ‘The Emirates Champions’, ‘The Jose Hustlers’ & ‘The Bangla Boys’ from Bangladesh FiberGlass camp will take part.

The selected champions are part of two labor camps. They will be jousting and using their skills and talents in this explosive competition while getting cheerful support from their own supporters and other guests coming to watch the event. People will be charged AED10 as entrance fee and all ticket funds will be divided up amongst the men as prize money. Sherbet and desserts will be offered by the hotel. In addition, Holiday Inn Dubai – Al Barsha staff are also sponsoring the event by putting together their own cash prize money for the players.

Mrs. Roxana Jaffer, Resident Director of Sovereign Hotels Groups, Holiday Inn Dubai – Al Barsha said, “This should be a tremendous event and a source of fun and goodwill from everyone involved. These two particular labor camps have been deactivated and these men have not earned any money in the past two years. This event is an opportunity for them to take home some money in another form than that of charity, in a fun atmosphere of camaraderie and with pride. I truly hope it gives them something really positive to take back with them”

This initiative is coming from the AdoptaCamp organization that have started working with laborers four and a half years ago. Mrs. Saher Shaikh, Founder of AdoptaCamp and Care Packages for Laborers explained, “The purpose of AdoptaCamp is to meaningfully improve the lives of the men who have built our beautiful city. I visit camps nearly every day. AdoptaCamp currently has 9210+ men and 36 camps under its umbrella. In recent years, I'm seeing an increasing number of what I call "abandoned camps". These are camps where the employer has absconded leaving the men with months, sometimes two years worth of unpaid salaries”.

The organization has a multi-faceted approach: Physical which includes Hygiene workshops, pro bono dental/medical/optical treatment, making the camps bedbug, lice and cockroach free; Emotional which includes counseling, writing letters home, settling interpersonal disputes; Mental which includes English classes at AUD, sight-seeing trips expanding their horizons. It involves hundreds of volunteers and combined to the program “the Care packages days”, it makes a huge difference.

The game of carrom is played in India since 18th century. Once treated to be a pastime game, about 20 million people in India now play it at competitive level in an organized manner. It is a scientific game and is based on physics and geometry. It requires thorough knowledge of angles, deftness of touch, keen sight and superlative control of nerves besides mental and physical fitness. It also requires skill and deep concentration.
