Theatregoers can see a production of L'Incoronazione di Poppea in Bilbao, with the organisers observing that a great many styles are incorporated into the piece.

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - September 7th, 2010 - There will be a production of L'Incoronazione di Poppea at the Bilbao arts space Teatro Arriaga this autumn.

It will be staged on October 1st and 2nd, with the venue pointing out that this was the final piece written by celebrated composer Claudio Monteverdi.

"The author of the libretto, Giovanni Francesco Busenello, who took inspiration from Tacitus' Annals and The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius, recounts the dubious manoeuvres used by Poppea to satisfy her relentless ambition: to be crowned empress," a representative from the theatre explained.

They noted that the piece is an intriguing experience, perhaps because it was one of the first orchestral productions to be carried out for an audience who paid for their tickets, rather than aristocrats.

As a result, the organisers noted there is a great variety of styles included within the same performance.

Guest conductor Kenneth Weiss - co-director of Les Arts Florissants - will lead the orchestra, while stage direction will be handled by Emilio Sagi.

Tickets for this stunning production cost between €12 (£10) and €55, with the performance beginning at 20:00 local time on both days.
