Racing fans around the world will be excited to learn that 2012 marks the official re-launch of the Eco Targa Florio, the world's oldest motorcar race.
(TRAVPR.COM)UK - October 4th, 2012 - Times are quite different now, however, from when the race was first run. The 2012 version of the event, which is to take place along the winding roads of Sicily, Italy, will feature two categories of vehicles, both of them forward-thinking - electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. Each category will have a separate programme to follow, one that is designed to challenge the design class of the vehicles involved.
The goals of the Eco Trophy Competition, in addition to providing competitors and spectators with a rousing good race, are to help spread information and awareness about energy conservation and issues of sustainability, particularly as they apply to fuel consumption. It is for this reason that the event will heavily stress the use of hybrid and electric vehicles instead of those that are powered only by internal combustion engines running on fossil fuels.
The event, known as the Electric Eco Trophy, will happen on a portion of the route used for the Eco Targa Florio and will take place on both Friday and Saturday, 12th and 13th October. Over the course of two days of racing, about 450 kilometres will be covered by competitors. The Hybrid Eco Trophy, in contrast, will use the whole route of the Eco Targa Florio and will last from Thursday through to Saturday of the same week.
This means that on Friday and Saturday, both events will be taking place. The hybrid competition will consist of three distinct stages along Sicily's roads, with both competitions finishing in the city of Palermo, Sicily. Visitors looking to get the best views of the race will find plenty of vantage points along the whole length of the course as well as in Palermo itself.
Visitors planning on attending the event can visit Quality Villas Italy (www.QualityVillasItaly.co.uk) for a selection of high quality short term holiday rentals all over Sicily.
