CAVA WEEK DRAWS THOUSANDS TO SMALL SPANISH TOWN OF SANT SADURNí D'ANOIA
Industry: Holiday Rentals

The Cava Brotherhood, known in Spain as the Cofraria del Cava, will once again celebrate ‘Cava Week’ in grand style this coming October in the small Catalonian town of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia.

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - October 1st, 2012 - Located in northwestern Spain, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean Sea, Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is the place where more than 80% of all Spanish cava is produced. Cava is a sparkling wine reminiscent of champagne, but with a dryer flavour and a distinct Catalonian twist.

The festivities begin with the traditional crowning of the Cava Queen, who arrives at the ceremony accompanied by a royal court and escorted by the Barcelona police force's mounted brigade. After tasting the first pressings of the year's grape harvest from the esteemed fellowship of Sant Sandurní, the queen proceeds to a ceremonial dinner held at Torre Ramona.

This gourmet dinner is but one of many to come as the week progresses, with food, drink and fun for all. Cava Week features a bicycle race with 300 participants, an exhibition of artistic efforts related to the glories of cava and an evening filled with petanque, a game played with hollow metal balls.

Along the way, tourists who attend are able to enjoy folk music concerts dedicated to the vibrant sounds of the Catalonia region, along with workshops and talks dedicated to appreciating the special qualities of the mildly intoxicating beverage known as cava.

The highlight of the festival is on 12th October, when at least a thousand Cava fans from Barcelona board a special ‘Cava Train’ headed to Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. They are greeted at the station by carnival characters, including the traditional cabezudos, the large-headed costumed characters often seen in Spanish parades.
