Golf fans head to the 39th Ryder Cup golf competition hosted by the Medinah Country Club, Illinois from 25th to 30th September.

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - September 14th, 2012 - Widely regarded as one of the most compelling events in international golf, the Ryder Cup will be coming to Illinois for the very first time. The competition is a golf tournament that brings together players from the United States and from across Europe.

Jointly organized by the PGA European Tour and PGA of America, the Ryder Cup occurs on a biannual basis and is named after Samuel Ryder, who donated the trophy used in the first competition. The United States and Europe take turns playing host to the event, which means that after this year's contest, the Ryder Cup will not return to the United States for four years.

The Ryder Cup stands almost alone among high-profile golf competitions worldwide, since there is no prize money at stake. Instead, the golfers who will come to the prestigious Medinah Country Club this September will play for sheer glory and for love of the sport.  

For most of its history, the Ryder Cup involved two teams, one representing the USA and one jointly comprised of players from Britain and Ireland. Since 1979, however, the British and Irish team was expanded to include golfers from the rest of Europe, most notably Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark and Sweden.

Wins in the period since 1979 have been fairly evenly distributed between the two teams, with Team Europe taking the Ryder Cup nine times, including one competition that was a tie and the American team triumphing a total of seven times.
