Named after Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore, Raffles started as a 10-room bungalow 125 years ago. This Singapore Hotel soon became the haunt of business tycoons, the great and the good, rogues and adventurers, politicians, movie stars, authors and journalists.
Visiting writers included Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham and Noel Coward, a host of foreign correspondents – all of whom contribute to the stories and legends, fact and fiction, which have clung to the hotel ever since. Through their stories, the Long Bar, the Palm Court and the Billiard Room with its tiger, became familiar to people who had never even been to Singapore.
Come September 2012, Raffles Hotel will be celebrating its 125th anniversary with a host of activities. These include special themed events including “A Tiger’s Tale” Fancy Dress Dinner at the notable Bar & Billiard Room. 125th Anniversary Cocktail –1887 Sling Available From 16 September 2012
A new cocktail may soon follow the footsteps of the Singapore Sling to fame. Inspired by the legendary Singapore Sling, with a base of the hotel’s limited-edition Billecart-Salmon Brut Réserve Champagne, it is created by Raffles Hotel’s very own bartender, Randolf Velasco. The 1887 Sling is a fruity concoction that honours the original Singapore Sling and is presented in an attractive hue of coral.
