A festival for the delicate Jasmine flower in the French home of perfume.
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - July 23rd, 2012 - A few miles inland from the Mediterranean’s famous ports and resort towns, in the twisting foothills of the Alps, the town of Grasse rewards any visitor with its rich colours, marvellous views and phenomenal reputation as the world’s perfume capital.
Grasse’s steep streets are as pretty as any in this uniquely beautiful region, but scent is the sense that counts. The world’s best ‘professional noses’, les nez, must spend time training here. From 3rd to 5th August 2012, the Fête du Jasmin will keep this flower’s fine fragrance in everyone’s nostrils and minds.
An incredible twenty-seven tonnes of jasmine blossom is processed in the town annually, and Grasse is even the setting for the final chapters of the popular Perfume murder-mystery.
But the Fête’s opportunity to celebrate doesn’t always hold close to the flowery theme; every type of street performer is here, with impressive skills and showmanship. Visitors will enjoy the town’s excellent bars and restaurants, overlooking loud and lively displays that precede the main procession.
As the aromatically-adorned floats, laden with countless sprays of jasmine flowers move through the town, costumed girls on board throw the flowers to spectators, and spray jasmine scent into the night air.
Musical bands and troupes of dancers in elaborate floral costumes, surround the floats carrying high arches of jasmine flowers, bringing to this pretty hill town a rare scent of Mardi Gras.
