Official kickoff for Laconia Motorcycle Week benefits Laconia Fire Department Water Rescue Teams and Easter Seals NH Veterans Count Program
(TRAVPR.COM) USA - May 21st, 2012 - Laconia, N.H. – Every year for the past five, hundreds of dedicated bikers and a few hearty boaters have come out, rain or shine, to honor the memory of Peter Makris, proprietor of the NASWA Resort, community leader, avid US Marine “Leatherneck” motorcycle club member and boater. He left his mark, not only on the community he loved, but also on the hearts of many who loved him. The 6th annual run and all day rock ’n’ roll party continues the tradition and benefits the Laconia Fire Department and U.S. veterans.
“Our whole family is so grateful to our guests, friends and all the people who have joined in this celebration and way to give back to our community!” says Cynthia Makris, who now runs the family business started by her grandparents more than 77 years ago. “There is a lot of history behind this run and we know that bikers have big hearts and show it each year by joining in the fun and fundraising! This has really become a favorite annual charity ride, as well as the Official Kickoff for the Rally!”

Funds raised from this event have continued the funding Makris helped start in 2004 when the Laconia Fire Department had no water rescue unit, which it direly needed to help safety efforts on the 70-acre lake. After the death of Mark Miller, a local paramedic who was attempting a rescue, Makris stepped to the plate with a $5,000 check and asked his fellow businesses around Lake Winnipesaukee to do the same. Because of those early efforts, Laconia Fire Department has been a force in maintaining the safety of the Lakes Region.
The Easter Seals NH Veterans Count Program was added as a beneficiary as Makris was a U.S. Marine veteran, sensitive to the growing needs of today’s U.S. servicemen and their families.
Donations of raffle prizes, silent auction donations are welcomed. For more information, call (603) 366-4341, visit www.naswa.com/peter_makris.htm or like the NASWA Resort on Facebook.
