Hundreds of Citroën 2CV enthusiasts follow a scenic rally-circuit near the Cote d’Azur in the South of France.

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - February 1st, 2012 - This immensely characterful, practical little car, designed as a farmer’s family-wagon in the 1930s, has as many devotees today as ever. A high point in the ‘Deux-Cheveux’ calendar is the Route d’Or, near the Riviera in the South of France.

Over the weekend 25th-26th February 2012, as many as three hundred examples from the Cote d’Azur 2CV club, and many visitors, will gather at Grasse town centre for registration and a chance to admire and compare cars.

Drivers then follow a ‘surprise’ route through the picturesque local countryside, returning for aperitifs, dinner and entertainment.

Next day, the rally runs up a mountainous road selected for its amazing displays of sweet-smelling mimosa flowers. The plants’ blossoming is brief and beautiful, and gives the occasion its name as the country round the village of Tanneron blooms in bright yellow.

Rare 2CVs of every kind are here, including the 1960s two-engined ‘Sahara’ 4x4 version, though their particular off-road talent shouldn’t be essential for the chosen route. A ‘hippy’ atmosphere shows among many drivers and passengers, with cars sprayed in psychedelic tones and the design’s ecological association worn with pride.

The effect of this favourite French historic symbol of economy and versatility, proceeding in great numbers and almost infinite variety, is equally popular for the fun it provides.

The mimosa flowers’ golden glow adds to the colour, each car returning from the run with sprays of yellow petals hooked under wiper-blades, around wing mirrors and billowing out of the canvas roofs.
