The terminal recovers the figures of 2008, after increasing 6.3% and consolidating its international strength with ten million travellers
Malaga airport concludes 2011 with almost thirteen million passengers. Just over 12.8 million, to be precise, which means an increase of 6.3%, or in other words, 800.000 more than the previous year.
These figures, provided yesterday by Aena (Spanish Airports and Air Navigation), reveal that the Malaga-Costa del Sol terminal has made its personal lift off until reaching the standards of 2008, first year of the impact of the crisis. Despite the recovery, the registered figure of passengers is still far away from the historical record of 2007, in which this airport, yet without the new terminal, surpassed the amount of 13.5 million travellers.
From the air traffic statistics in these facilities, the consolidation of the Malaga-Costa del Sol airport as the entrance gate of foreign travellers is well worth mentioning. In fact, out of the overall of passengers, 10.097.117 travelled in international flights, almost seven points more than the previous year.
The national market also maintained a positive balance, in spite of the improvements of high-speed trains and the symptoms of laziness that the Spanish tourism seem to show. Nevertheless, Aena explained that 2.665.348 passengers that travelled between Spanish cities passed through the terminal, 4.6% more compared to the same period the previous year.
The majority of those who passed through Malaga airport between January and December 2011, an amount of 12.762.465 to be precise, used commercial flights.

The road to recovery extends to the accumulated volume of operations during the whole year. This way, the number of flights in 2011 increased to 107.397, 1.7% more than in 2010.
The operations registered last December, in which 607.428 travellers (0,2% more) passed through the terminal, has highly contributed towards this upward curve. In this period, the number arrivals and departures increased to 5.935, 4.2% less than in the last month of 2010. Aena pointed out the 11th of December as the busiest day with 227 operations and 24.470 passengers, all in one day.
The registered increase in the balance of the Malaga airport terminal is in tune with the evolution of the totality of national airports, that concluded 2011 with an increase of travellers of six points, which meant an operation of over 204 million passengers, in 2.1 million flights, with an increase of 0.9%.
Aena highlighted yesterday the increase of passengers. “In 2011, the second highest figure in history was achieved, only surpassed in 2007, where the record amount of 210.404.170 travellers was reached”. They also clarified that it’s the third consecutive year in increase of travellers, in which 187 million were added to the figure of 2009 and 192 million to the figure of 2010.
Malaga-Costa del Sol airport consolidated as the forth most important airport in Spain, passenger wise, just behind Barajas, El Prat, that has broken its historical record with 34.399.180 passengers, and Palma de Mallorca.
In the overall of Andalusian terminals, the one in Malaga concentrates 65% of the activity of Andalusian airports, that added up a total of 20.4 million travellers, 7% more. It even has quite a big advantage over the airport in Seville, that with 4.4 million passengers, it’s the second most busiest in the region.
