The aptly named ‘Cheese Eating Sunday Corfu’ or Tyrofagos Sunday in Greek, is an annual event held on the Greek island of Corfu; it takes place in mid-February. This event has religious roots, but is now almost nothing more than an excuse to party and celebrate life.

(TRAVPR.COM) THAILAND - January 16th, 2012 - Visitors to the island will be amazed by the sheer vibrance of Corfu’s Cheese Eating Sunday. It is a day filled with floats, parades, fanciful costuming and dancing through the streets.

The origin of the day is, like many other celebrations, religious. Meat is forbidden on this day, for religious reasons, so macaroni and cheese is eaten instead. The event occurs during the lead up to the religious period of Lent and Cheese Eating Sunday is followed by Clean Monday, a day when the devotion to cheese is switched to an obsession with bread, cuttlefish and squid.

In celebration of this religious festival, the priests in Corfu undertake a unique activity, dancing through the streets, with the head priest leading a column made up of all the men in the village. Winding through the streets, in an order dictated by rank and age, the men chant without instrumental accompaniment.

Masked groups circulate throughout the town and the main Carnival parade takes place, with a burning of the King Carnival following a reading of the ‘will’ in the evening. The day is ended by a spectacular fireworks display.

Cheese Eating Sunday is a fantastic celebration that is ideal for those who love cheese and a fun-filled, bright celebration. With the start of Lent looming and good weather beckoning, it is a time for joyful celebration before entering Lent’s more sombre days. Wild dancing, loud music, historical re-enactment and unique events that can be seen nowhere else litter the Greek Island of Corfu on this day.
