Florence’s centre of fashion showcases the state of the art, of cloth.

From 25th to 27th January 2012, Italian fashion promoter Pitti Immagine presents its Filati event (literally, ‘thread’) as a window on the development of textiles, and knitwear couture.

Held at Florence’s central Fortezza da Basso, the event is arranged on a very large scale, and attended by thousands of industry professionals, fashionistas and clients. Designers are here with their latest outfits, and to picture what’ll be turning heads on the next year’s catwalks.

The event encourages exploration of the possibilities that are available from the vast range of fabrics, which differing threads and processes make possible. Sheer silk, luxurious cashmere, angora and mohair, blends of natural and man-made fibres, all here in skeins, on spools, woven and cut into fabulous outfits.

Galleries of cloth samples enable designers to plan their work, gauge the visual and sensual effects of different yarns, and to compare the strikingly alternative modes in which each fabric can be used.

The company’s Spazio Ricerca ‘laboratory’ develops and launches future fashion formulas, combining avant garde themes and ground-breaking yarn production techniques.

The theme for this 70th Filati fair, is ‘Futurural’, encouraging consideration of the rustic reliance on durable cloth and sustainable environmental philosophies, translating into simple fashions as a response to hectic urban lifestyle. Special sections of the show will be based on ‘country creativity’.
